St.Louis Mardigras
A year and a half after we first met in Porto Alegre, Brazil, my @PA friend, Vivi came to visit her host family in St.Louis. So on Saturday, I drove to St.Louis with Virginia and Kathey. Saturday also happened to be the big mardigras celebration in St.Louis - I believe it's the 2nd largets in the country.
We first arrived in the 'burbs of St.Louis and met up with Vivi and her host family. Really nice people and an even nicer 15 year old son who cooked us three visitors a very good lunch (one can never go wrong with salmon, couscous, ravioli, and meatballs).
Vivi's friend, Yael, and a few of her friends later came to her house. We left soon afterwards for the city. And that's when the craziness really started. I think it'd be too long of an entry to write in full detail of everything that happened, but below is a short list:
- Vivi's friend is a terrible driver. I almost got into a really bad accident following her when I had to cut off a guy in order to make the exit ramp. She also made a left on a street when she was not on the turning lane. I had to follow her as well.
- Don't remember all of what happened during the real mardigras. Do remember one of Vivi's friends flashed a beer seller so Virginia and I could get free beer. I ended up with a lot of beads, though I'm not sure how I ended up with most of them. Mind you, I do remember that I did not bend my integrity to get them.
- Walked almost halfway across the Mississippi river before we realized that we were heading in the wrong direction. FYI, The Landing is not in Illinois.
- The fire alarm at our hotel goes off at 3am. By the time we went outside of our room, the hallway was thick with smoke. Ran from our floor (the 17th) to ground level. Turned out to be a false alarm - someone sprayed the fire extinguisher all over the place. When Virginia called the fire department, they said no one ever called them about the fire alarm going off at the Grand Reneissance. I believe our campus dorms have better evacuation and safety measures.
- Drove back to the 'burbs at 4am. Got lost in downtown St.Louis - could not locate the on ramp to the parkway. Downtown St.Louis at 4am - pretty damn scary.
Conclusion for the weekend: even though it was great to see Vivi and I had a overall good time, St.Louis does not like me and vise versa. Am not looking into going back to St.Louis anytime soon.
