Beach Weekend

Sanya

Topic of the day: A gorgeous noneventful weekend in paradise

As it turns out, my company was nice enough to send its entire China staff on a weekend outing to beautiful Sanya, Hainan Island. Engulfed by the South China Sea, the island is one of the southernmost points in China (even more south than Hong Kong). The island's original inhabitants was the Li minority group (an off shoot of the Hmong people), then later inhabited by the Muslim Hui minority and then Han Chinese. It is also China's largest island.

A 4 hour plane ride took us to this gem of an island, where we were promptly shuttled to our hotel, the Holiday Inn in Yalong Bay, the most beautiful stretch of beach in Sanya. Now, I don't usually take very many resort vacations. In fact, the only resort vacation I took before this trip was the 7 day cruise during junior year of university (Digs and Drake, don't even start!). While most of the time, I think of resort vacations as too over-priced over-rated, and just plain boring, I totally loved this resort vacation!! I accomplished absolutely nothing the whole long weekend that I was there - took almost next to no pictures, only ventured off hotel grounds once (to go to a company organized dinner), and remained either poolside or beachside all weekend long. While I don't plan on taking many resort vacations (especially with my own money!), this was such a fabulous weekend.

I was basically doing what you see people do in brochures and resort pamphlets - drinking coconuts in the pool bar, swimming in crystal blue/green water, soaking up the sun, etc. For a weekend, things basically don't get any better than this.

On Saturday night, the company also organized a great BBQ, possibly the best I've ever had (or at least the one with the most gourmet variety!) - there were oysters, chicken, lamb, crabs, shrimps, clams, fish, antipasto, salad, dessert, the whole nine yards - wonderful!

Leaving Sanya proved to be very hard - who can leave a place where the sand is that white and the water that blue?? *sigh* There just goes another spot on my list of places I've got to revisit again... :)

China life

Beijing Sunset

As the summer draws to an close, the Chinese are starting to prepare for the Mid-Autumn Festival. The other day, while riding a cab to work, I heard on the radio that this year, moon cakes (a traditional Mid-Autumn Festival dessert), are suppose to be more elaborate than ever. Besides traditional fillings such as red bean, sesame paste, and so on, innovative stuffing in recent years have included coffee flavored paste (from Starbucks, of course), various fruit flavors, ice cream filling, etc. This year, one company plans to introduce swallow's nest filled moon cakes. These precious cakes, 6 per package, will be sold at 1,980 RMB!! To put things in perspective, that would be around 248 USD!!! Considering how until very recently, the average annual disposable income for people living in Shanghai was about 2,000 RMB, that is simply amazing...

While picking up some breakfast at Seven-Eleven the other day, I noticed that besides Chinese products, the store also carried Barilla pasta as well as Barilla pasta sauce! If this trend continues, Jenny Lou's will have a run for its money!

While researching for a project, I recently found out that Chongqing, China, is the largest city in the WORLD!!! The Sichuan city currently has about 32 million inhabitants - that's crazy!!! And I heard that the 32 million people are just the people living IN the actual city itself - including suburban residents, I heard someone say that the city's population numbered at 50 million people!!! That's bigger than some countries!!! Unreal...

In case you're curious, I took this photo today at Dom's BBQ (held in his new abode). It was definitely one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen in Beijing (who said Beijing cannot be beautiful?!?! ;) ). The BBQ, by the way, was a wonderful time. It was a small crowd, very relaxed, great company, good food, plenty of beer, and fabulous weather.

Last but not least, because I've been tagged... (but contrary to popular belief, I actually had a very busy weekend! :) )

I am thinking about...
How wonderful today was

I said...
I was very thankful to have the friends that I have

I want to...
Believe more in myself

I wish...
I can fly!

I miss...
Friends and family who are not here with me. And being on the road again

I hear...
Joseph Arthur - Song in the Sun

I wonder...
What the future holds

I regret...
Nothing - I try not to do that

I am...
Who I am

I dance...
When I want to

I sing...
As much as my (currently) hoarse little voice allows me to :)

I cry...
During moving movie scenes

I am not always...
Un-relaxed!!!

I write...
Blogs :)

I confuse...
My directions. Granted, I am still very proud of myself that I learned how to tell north, south, east, and west in Xinjiang. So now, I can at least tell what direction I'm heading...but only when the sun's out

I need...
To take more photos!

I should try...
Scuba diving. And detox (again!)

I finish...
This blog entry as of right...now! :)

Inspiration

Topic of the day: What true inspiration is

I first heard about Dan Eldon a few years ago and subsequently bought his journal.  From the first moment, I was in awe of him - his talent as an artist and a photographer, his sense of adventure, and the way he lived his life.

Today, a slow day at work, I randomly thought of that great book of mine (which, I unfortunately left in the States), and googled that familiar source of inspiration.

After looking through his, it's inspired me again.  It also got me thinking...

Maybe it is about time that I become stronger...  Ideas are still being floated around and plans are still in the works, but I think in due time, a big change will be necessary and will take place.

In the meantime:

Topic of the day: A fantabulous weekend in Yangshou

There's a Chinese saying that goes something to the effects of: "Guilin's scenery surpasses all the lands". That's a heavy claim to make, but after a weekend in delightful Yangshou (a great little backpacker town located about 60 kms away from Guilin), I'm starting to believe that whoever started that quote were right about something!

To get an idea of what Yangshou's like, think Vietnam's Ha Long Bay, minus the water, insert picturesque town. What makes Yangshou special is probably a mix between the laid back atmosphere of a "typical" southern Chinese village, friendly locals, the cool little restaurants/bars and shops on Yangshou's West Street, and the stunning karst mountains that surrounds the town. Spending a weekend there turned out to be a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of Beijing (all done, of course, with the great company of a select few from Shanghai ;) ).

Instead going into too much detail, I thought I would just briefly write down some trip highlights instead...

Trip highs:
- Renting bikes and riding a few kilometers outside of town to a close by water cave. Turned out to be almost like a touristy version of splunking. I thought it was very interesting and had a great finish - a big waterfall inside the cave!
- Breakfast/brunch at Cafe Del Moon.
- Cruising down the Li River and enjoying the 20 kuai scenery.
- Beer fish...yummm...
- The GORGEOUS drive from the Li River back to Guilin. It's a shame I'm such an inept landscape photographer - I took no decent landscape shots this whole weekend!

Trip Low:
- There was only one - when Digs lost one of his Havaianas flip flops during our cave trek!

Overall, what a productive weekend (what a change from all our other weekend getaways!)! I'm keeping a mental note to myself: if ever in the future I need some time away from Beijing, I'm going to Yangshou! (or anywhere in Tibet... ;) )
